An Evening of North Indian Classical Ragas on Two Innovative Guitars – Saturday, September 28 @ 7pm
On April 12, 2019 By admin

Watermelon Music Presents:

An Evening of North Indian Classical Ragas on Two Innovative Guitars

The guitar assumes new sounds and shapes in the hands of ‘raga guitarists’ Matthew Grasso and Joel Veena. The warm plucked tone of Matthew’s raga guitar combines perfectly with the sliding ornamentation of the Indian slide guitar, creating a richness of guitar sound previously unheard. Together, Matthew Grasso and Joel Veena perform North Indian ragas accompanied on tabla by Vishan Menon, a talented student of Pandit Anindo Chatterjee. All three musicians approach their music with a sense of devotion, which invites the audience into a focused, meditative space. The trio will perform evening ragas on modified guitars and tabla, breathing new life into Hindustani classical music while reaching the tonal, rhythmic and emotional depths of this venerable art form.

Musicians:

Matthew Grasso – 19-stringed avatar guitar

Joel Veena – mohan veena (Hindustani slide guitar)

Vishan Menon – tabla

Szlachetka & Jamie Kent – Thursday, October 17 @ 7:30pm
On April 12, 2019 By admin

Watermelon Music Presents:

Szlachetka & Jamie Kent

Szlachetka:

Years before he teamed up with Grammy-winning producer David Bianco (Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams) for the Heart of My Hometown sessions, Szlachetka was the frontman of acclaimed LA-based roots-rock band the Northstar Session. With the band, he recorded five albums and appeared in NBC’s TV series Parenthood. He began his solo career in 2014 releasing Waits for a Storm to Find.

Three years later, Heart of My Hometown shines new light on Szlachetka as a singer, prolific songwriter, storyteller, and fiery lead guitarist. It’s an album whose touchstones include the charged roots-rock of Tom Petty and the warm, acoustic sounds of Jackson Browne. Szlachetka moves between both ends of that spectrum with ease, splitting his time between full-band anthems — including the riff-heavy “Until That Echo,” co-written with Train’s Scott Underwood — and more intimate, acoustic moments like “Wildflowers on the Highway,” featuring an appearance by duet partner Katelyn Clampett. The album’s title track rests somewhere in the middle, layering pop hooks and three-part harmonies into a nostalgic song about remembering one’s roots. It’s an album built for road trips, slow dances, wild Friday nights, and everything in between.

Rolling Stone hailed Szlachetka as one of the 10 New Artists You Need to Know, describing his forthcoming album as “a soundtrack for both the highway and the heartland…a collection of road-dog roots-rockers and Americana ballads inspired by the people (and places) he’s left behind in the rearview mirror.”

Now based in Nashville, Szlachetka continues to tour nationally with a schedule that’s seen him open for Brandy Clark, the Byrds’ Chris Hillman, the Heartbreakers’ Mike Campbell, Brandi Carlile and more.

Jamie Kent:

Named by RollingStone.com as an “Artist You Need To Know”, and dubbed a “Must Watch Artist” by The Huffington Post, one might say the future of Jamie Kent looks quite promising. Drawing on influences from modern americana artists like Jason Isbell and Will Hoge, as well as paying tribute to classic greats like John Prine and Tom Petty, Kent is a “an important young voice with something to say” (Music City Roots). Kent has had no fear of hard work, playing 150+ shows a year including tours with Huey Lewis & The News, The Doobie Bros, America, Brothers Osborne, Brandy Clark, and Marc Broussard. His songs have been heard across major network television, from VH1 to NBC’s The Today Show and World Of Dance. His latest album “All American Mutt”,  debuted at #16 on the Billboard Top Country Albums Chart and #3 on the Heatseeker Charts. Kent was the only independent artist to break into the Top 20 at the time.

Watermelon Music Presents:

Don Alder – An Evening of Soulful Singing, Stories and Acoustic Guitar Fireworks

As winner of the 2015 Domenic Troiano Guitar Award (CDN), 2011 Worldwide Guitar Idol (held in London, UK), 2010 Guitar Superstar contest (LA, USA) and the 2007 International Finger style Championships, Don Alder from Vancouver, BC has earned his place as one of the top acoustic guitarists in the world and is the only guitarist to win all of the top prestigious guitar competitions armed with just an acoustic guitar. Alder plays with a passion that has quickly earned him a reputation as Vancouver’s “best kept little secret”.

His music is a unique combination of deeply textured melody and story. Lyrical and compelling, his original songs are notes of exploration – some passionate and haunting, some hard-driven, others light and teasing. In quiet pieces or pushing right to the edge, Don’s phenomenal finger style playing and rich voice captivate. Don is also recognized as one of the of the world’s top harp guitarists.

Boot Juice – Friday, September 13 @ 7:30pm
On April 12, 2019 By admin

Watermelon Music Presents:

Boot Juice

A band that refuses to be locked into a single genre, Davis, California-based Boot Juice find a sense of freedom in their ability to float from bluesy rock’n’roll to progressive bluegrass and back. Inspired by the likes of Railroad Earth and soulful harmonies of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Boot Juice curates a sound that is uniquely their own, resulting in a layered and dynamic live performance. Since 2016, singer-songwriter-guitarists Evan Daly and Connor Herdt, vocalist Jessica Stoll, bassist Brett Worley, and drummer David Provost have toured across the American west, woodshedding their sound and ultimately picking up mandolinist Alex Roth (West Nile Ramblers) to round out their modern style of string band music.
Following the 2018 release of their EP The Blackburn Sessions, Boot Juice toured throughout the Pacific Northwest before heading into the studio to lay down the tracks for their debut. The subsequent full-length album Speaking in Tones was released in May 2019. Boot Juice will be showcasing their debut album on tour this summer through the American west.
