The German cellist Georg Goltermann (1824-2898) wrote virtuoso cello music for his own use. Many of his eight concertos for cello and orchestra have slipped out of the standard 21st Century repertoire. Goltermann wrote his 4th and 5th Concertos after he was no longer performing as a solo cellist. In these pieces he sought to develop artistic and virtuosic instincts in other cellists by way of beautiful melodies and harmonies without employing difficult double-stops and advanced bow strokes. Along with works bu Karl Davydov and David Popper, Goltermann's concertos form an essential part in developing the cellist's DNA needed to play the great cello repertoire of Schumann, Dvorak, Lalo, Saint-Saens and Tchailovsky definitively.
